Dancing with the Stars
Well I tried it again! It is getting easier to do, the figure drawing I've done has helped but getting the clothing to look possible is another skill to work on. The first sketch was free enough to try using watercolor, my sketch and wash watercolor pencil did its own abstraction on the one with the yellow. The blue skirt is the only finished pat of the next one, will they ever get thier arms?

EDM #56 and Helen's class 5
Helen had us do an interesting set of drawings
, starting with an out of focus slide that you could barely see the face features. She suggested charcoal and gum eraser so you could pull out highlights. Working from general to specific information, every few minutes she focused and made the image more concise. I guess the same general principal as squinting at your subject to determine light and darks and general composition. I've worked very little with portraiture so it was quite a challenge for me. These are 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 8B graphite on card stock. (charcoal is so messy) I always think I'll get back to them and finish........on to the next thing. Someone asked for an ugly subject for the 3rd one, those are extended lips! For that one I used a pen and did not darken the features as I knew I would not have the option to pull out lights.
My quick self portrait is hard to post as I've heard others express. It is also pen on card stock, doesn't look like me, I've given myself bigger eyes and I look younger than I am. Helen's exercises gave me a little confidence to try. I would feel acomplished if I could draw a person that actually like them. I will keep trying.

Dancing With the Stars EDM Question "How do you draw people?"
This series of drawings was done last night in front of the TV. I've never watched Dancing With the Stars before. My mother-in-law was looking forward to the new season. I had the urge to sketch, so began! I think the fellow in the first one came out best. It was fun to try to do them quickly! Since most of my figure work is done with nude models it was interesting to try to get the clothing in motion. I have a series of little dancers in mind for a glass project so it was good practice.
Helen's Class 4
We first looked at face proportions. The most meaningful for me was the arch of the upper lid being higher toward the nose and lower lid lower toward the outside. Planes of the nose, not forgetting the thickness of the lid. A good refresher on proportions. My practice page. She then had us draw each other applying the principals. I'm not real happy with the results... its supposed to be a struggle! Next she had us squint or take off glasses and start just with the shadows we saw and try to work bigger. This was hard to start with no oval reference or anything but I think my results were better and I'm encouraged to try more faces. Nether drawing looks like the person except for a few subtle things. It was a good exercise class time went by fast
