Dancers in Glass

I thought this would be a good time to add some pendants with dancers! The blue and gold on black one is 1 inch round. It has 2 etched layers of dancing figures, as you move it side to side the colors and view changes, it has a gold plated silver bail. A very unique pendant. I've been asked to price the pendants. This one is $55.00. The blackstone and jade beaded one has a layer of dancers that shift aqua to greengold and a second layer of blue dancers that didn't photograph well. It is also 1 inch, sterling silver clasp, silver bail $75.00.















The third one is 1 x 1 1/4 inch, it has a 24K gold painted figure dancing across the aqua background, it has a gold plated bail. This one is $35.oo. I will be making some that look more like the Dancing with the Stars figures soon.

Dancing With the Stars EDM Question "How do you draw people?"

The answer to the question is practice! Don't worry if your results are not wonderful. Keep at it!
This series of drawings was done last night in front of the TV. I've never watched Dancing With the Stars before. My mother-in-law was looking forward to the new season. I had the urge to sketch, so began! I think the fellow in the first one came out best. It was fun to try to do them quickly! Since most of my figure work is done with nude models it was interesting to try to get the clothing in motion. I have a series of little dancers in mind for a glass project so it was good practice.

Helen's Class 4

Helen's class focused on portraiture. With all my years of drawing I have attempted very few faces, in fact when I started doing the tiny etched glass figures I realized although the horses were simple for me, the riders were a struggle. So began work on my own species. A few years of a few hours monthly working on figure drawing has helped allot.
We first looked at face proportions. The most meaningful for me was the arch of the upper lid being higher toward the nose and lower lid lower toward the outside. Planes of the nose, not forgetting the thickness of the lid. A good refresher on proportions. My practice page. She then had us draw each other applying the principals. I'm not real happy with the results... its supposed to be a struggle! Next she had us squint or take off glasses and start just with the shadows we saw and try to work bigger. This was hard to start with no oval reference or anything but I think my results were better and I'm encouraged to try more faces. Nether drawing looks like the person except for a few subtle things. It was a good exercise class time went by fast

EDM # 80 Something that makes you happy Drawing in Wire

Sometimes I draw with wire. This one is 6 x 8 Inches. They change constantly depending on the lighting and direction of view. I find myself bending just a bit more...... When this one was put away she had a smaller chin and higher hair. They animate themselves, wire is fun to work with. It is a nice alternative to the tiny glasswork. They do make me happy.

Sometimes I draw on glass.
This is ground glass in liquid form applied to "float" or window glass, fired to about 1500 ' F. 4 x 9 1/2" I look forward to doing more of these.

Wow! Update: Watercolor Artist friend going on a trip to Hawaii bought this one to wear on the trip! That's the third pendant to visit Hawaii and one has been to Africa! I havn't been either place! I had 2 cats that had 3 airplane rides before I ever flew anywhere.

Helen's 2nd class

A little late for Helen's class missed doing a dozen thumbnail's of two small objects with 2 parts touching 2 sides of paper. She passed out 3 4 x 5 inch velum ( wonderful sheer paper) asked us to do very quick line, value, and negative space studies. Then the white chalk on black paper. The next exercise was to do the same drawing on grey paper. I haven't got to that one yet! Repeating the same object a few times is very helpful. I see now that I made the white inner line on the black too straight, its a nicer shell in the value study, I can change that. Seems to float, not setting down enough in space

The colors in the recent sunsets have been inspiring! This mound of rocks has an opening that catches the light. I've thought of painting it so many times.

Part of the still life I focused on, pen and ink. The last exercise was to cover up the still life and draw from memory. Its the brown toned one. Good, I figured out how to add more than one image. Too bad I don't know how to arrange them.

Wow! I got an image in here. Its a start. This is a 1 x 1 1/4 inch fused glass pendant, made by heating 3 layers of glass in a small kiln to near 1500 degrees F. Two of the three layers are Dichroic glass which has a metal coating that I have etched the forest design in. Embedded and fired between the layers is a handmade fine silver bail. The necklace is blackstone and onyx with a sterling silver clasp. It is now available at Studio 25, Spanish Village, Balboa Park, San Diego, Calif. I love glass and I love to draw so creating this unique type of Art glass is fun for me.
